Nashville’s Newest Brunch: Tavern

One question I get fairly often: “Where should I go for brunch in Nashville?”

While I can name some places, I wish there were both more options and more interesting options. Add to that same question the words “on Saturday?” and the list severely dwindles.

Sure, there are a couple of restaurants that serve a good brunch on both days of the weekend, but for the most part I think our city is truly lacking in choices.

Thankfully, a new spot has been added to my very short list. Three weeks ago, Tavern in Midtown starting serving brunch on both Saturdays and Sundays!

Tavern’s Cheddar Biscuits with Chorizo Gravy

I think I’ve mentioned before that I’m definitely a savory brunch person. (of course there is that overnight caramel french toast casserole that can briefly convert me to the other side)

So while the Tavern menu has some sweet options that look quite amazing–  red velvet waffle with cream cheese drizzle and pretzel pancakes with white chocolate mousse and dulce de leche!! — we chose to go in the opposite direction.

Biscuits and gravy are definitely a comfort food of mine, and the minute I spotted the Cheddar Biscuits with Chorizo Gravy on the menu, I knew it would be the first thing I ordered. A huge portion of 3 large biscuits smothered in chorizo gravy, my husband and I shared this as an appetizer to get the meal started. Since it was so large, we each only ate one biscuit to save some room for what was to come…..

The Nooner
omelet, bacon scramble, fried oysters, spicy sour cream

There’s been some talk around town recently that the Tavern burger is one of the best in Nashville, so even though it was brunch and I could order the burger any time of the day, I couldn’t bring myself to pass it up. A mixture of beef ribeye & filet on a meltaway bun, we chose white cheddar and roasted green chiles as additional toppings. Incredible.

As our other entree, we turned to the Yolks section of the menu. While there were several options that were beyond tempting, the one that really stood out for its uniqueness was The Nooner. A basic omelet with bacon was anything but plain as it was crowned with five fried oysters, each with a dollop of spicy sour cream.

And I can’t leave out the partner to each of these entrees, the “white trash hash”, a sinful mess of diced up french fries and ooey, gooey cheese. Oh my.

While we did focus on the carnivorous dishes during this particular visit, there are plenty of meatless options as well.

I’m eying the Huevos Rancheros, a dish of Cuban-style black beans, 2 fried eggs, corn tortillas, salsa verde, and queso fresco, for my next visit. I’ve always been a big fan of the dish and have a feeling that theirs will not disappoint.

There is another item found on both the brunch and dinner menu that I’m particularly intrigued by, the Kaya toast, a dish that hails from Singapore. I haven’t yet tried it myself, but my friend Tabitha, who just happens to be Singaporean, has had it and gives it a glowing endorsement. You simply must check out her blog post for all the details on this interesting treat!

You can see for yourself with a glance at the full menu, whether you’re a savory or sweet brunch person, Tavern has you covered. Oh, and did I mention they’ve got 2-for-1 brunch libations? So see, even if you’re on a liquid diet, they can accommodate you!
