Favorite Southern Dishes
“What is your favorite Southern dish?”
It seems like a simple enough question, but when one of my Twitter followers asked me this last week, I was completely stumped. Not stumped because I couldn’t think of one, but stumped because so many things popped into my head that there wouldn’t be enough characters available to fit them all into my tweet!
So, I didn’t answer. How rude of me. But now I’m answering, just in a much longer way….
I’m a list-maker, so I made a list. Then, as the days passed, I gradually scratched off a few that I decided weren’t my absolute favorites. What IS my favorite Southern dish? Well, the answer is, I don’t have just one. But I forced myself to narrow it down to 10 that I really, really wouldn’t want to live without:
Pimento Cheese
BBQ and Burgoo
Blackberry or Peach Cobbler
Fried Squash, Fried Pickles and Fried Green Tomatoes
Shrimp n Grits
Fried Apple Pies
Country Ham on an angel biscuit with Peach Butter, Apple Butter, or Pear Butter
Biscuits and Sausage Gravy
Okay, so I may have cheated a little and might have slightly gone over 10, but hey, it’s my list, so I can do that!
Now what about you? What are your favorite Southern dishes?
My Top Ten in no real order:
1. Macaroni Pie – Not mac and cheese, but macaroni pie like the Lee Brothers recipe (look it up)
2. Fried chicken
3. Fresh corn on the cob in the summer
4. Crowder peas
5. Peach Cobbler
6. Fried Okra
7. Red beans and rice
8. Pulled pork with Carolina style vinegar sauce
9. Churned ice cream
10. turnip greens
Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, biscuits and gravy
Fried okra
Pinto beans, fried potatoes and cornbread
Mmmmmm, I’m hungry now.:)
fried chicken
fried apple pies
fried chicken livers
country ham/biscuit
pulled pork
green beans w/ smoked hog jowl
crowder peas w/ chow chow
fried squash/okra
sorghum and biscuit
I love your list and it seems you and I have similar palates. I believe it would almost be easier to list my not so favorite Southern Dishes. That list would include chitterlings, sweet meats and head cheese. Even those lil bites of fat are palatable when incorporated into a Southern Feast of sides!
Ha! I think I’m right there with you on my list of “nots” ;-)
I am a Georgia Peach so of course, Peach Cobbler is on the list!
Followed by…
Cubed Steak a.k.a Country Fried steak accompanied by a buttermilk biscuit!
Fried Okra ( lightly dusted w/ cornmeal)
Brunswick Stew ( I can only find this in Georgia! The stuff up here is too chunky.)
creamed corn
cucumbers and onions in vinegar
deviled eggs
my Daddy’s homemade peach ice cream
Sweet Tea
Although I’ve never had Brunswick Stew, I’ve heard it’s very similar to Burgoo, which is on my list! Growing up in KY, we never had bbq without also having burgoo – they went hand in hand! http://www.southernliving.com/food/whats-for-supper/tale-two-stews-00400000007849/
“Ditto” most of yours, Beth. Plus…
Chicken ‘n Dumplins
Turnip greens with vinegar
Cheddar Cheese Grits
Biscuits & Chocolate Gravy OR Sawmill Gravy
Cornbread mushed up with Buttermilk (I learned this from my Paw Paw. Try it!)
Fried Potatoes & Onions
That was fun! Too bad I live in Montana. I guess I’ll put my cravings aside and go eat some elk now…
I have a top 3:
Macaroni & cheese
Pulled pork
Biscuits & gravy
Being a Southern-transplant from the North, I still have many to try including pimento cheese!
Potlikker soup! Preferably from Holly’s Eventful in knoxville
Peach cobbler is the bestttt
