Nashville Lifestyles Bartender Bash 2012
This post also appeared in The Tennessean, where I have a monthly feature in the Taste section!
Call it a cocktail enthusiast’s dream come true. Wine lovers have wine tastings. Beer drinkers have beer fests. Nashville cocktail connoisseurs have Bartender Bash!
An event like no other, the Nashville Lifestyles Bartender Bash, to be held at Union Station Hotel on Wednesday, August 29th, will provide guests with samplings of unique liquid creations from some of our city’s most talented bartenders.
Does proclaiming this event my favorite make me sound like a bit of a lush? I hope not, but if it does, then so be it; call me a lush! In my defense, there are other components to the evening that I enjoy just as much as the alcohol – delicious hors d’oeuvres, fantastic live music, and of course, the company of good friends.
While the night is full of fun, there’s also a fierce competition brewing in the background. This is a contest, and the dozen or so bartenders competing are sure to bring their A game. At the end of the night there will be three awards given: Most Creative Cocktail, Best (Belvedere) Red Martini, and the People’s Choice Award.
Here’s how it works: The competing bartenders each have a station set up where they showcase two original creations. Attendees can pick and choose what they sample, trying them all if they’re so inclined. In fact, since guests cast their votes for the People’s Choice Award, the bartenders love to see people coming back for more, as that may be a sign they’re going home a winner!
Laura Bell Bundy, Ty Brown, and Me judging Bartender Bash 2010
While all this sampling is happening, at the front of the room sits a table of judges waiting for their palates to be delighted. I’ve personally had the good fortune to be a part of the judges’ panel a few times, and am happy to report that I will be again this year.
After sipping every single cocktail made by the talented mixologists, the judges make the extremely difficult decision of who has the Most Creative Cocktail and the Best Martini. I know, I know. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it.
Now, to address one obvious issue that could arise from all of this indulging: the dreaded hangover.
This year, a very welcome addition to the event is The Hangover Prevention Station powered by Yelp. Marcia Masulla, Nashville’s Yelp community manager said this will be the first time they’ve hosted a station like this. “We all know cocktails will be flowing throughout so we wanted to be a helpful resource and experience that would benefit everyone.”
Those clever folks will have coffee brewed by Roast, Inc., Vitamin Water to help battle dehydration, and herbal remedies from Lotus Room to clear the senses. In addition, Marcia says their Yelp Hangover Prevention Guide “will feature information on cab and chauffeured transportation options, late night bites suggestions, and morning after coffee revivals.”
Tickets for Bartender Bash are $25 in advance at www.nashvillelifestyles.com, and while the website states that you can pay $30 at the door, I would definitely not count on doing that. This 21-and-older event typically sells out, so take my advice and purchase your tickets now!

To get us excited for the Bash, The Palm‘s Adrian Pointer, one of this year’s competitors, shared this yummy cocktail recipe, The Pretty In Pink.
Pretty in Pink
Recipe from The Palm Nashville Bartender Adrian Pointer
Ingredients:
2 strawberries
3 lemon wedges
2 oz Belvedere Vodka
1/2 oz Triple Sec
1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
1 oz Brut Champagne
Directions:
Start with a Chilled Martini glass and fill with 1 oz of Brut Champagne
In a Tumbler:
Muddle the fruit (2 strawberries and three lemon wedges), build the rest of the ingredients listed, add crushed ice and shake vigorously.
Stain into the Martini glass that already has the champagne in it. Garnish with a Strawberry and Serve.
(Please be assured that Adrian doesn’t get any extra points for this, and this is not one of the concoctions I’ll be judging at the Bartender Bash.)

My fave cocktail right now is probably a mojito. More of a wind drinker, but I’m totally in favor of expanding my horizons! :)
Right now I am loving bourbon and margarita mix together – the Bourbonrita or Kentucky Margarita!
I’m already a fan on Facebook!
And I meant wine drinker, of course. :) I’m following you Twitter and just tweeted the contest info.
And I’m already following you on Facebook. That’s how I found out about the contest. Thanks – it sounds fun!
Favorite Cocktail- Rumba Pomegrante Mojito (glad I can still get them at Jackson’s!)
Already a fan on facebook!
A moscow mule is my favorite!

I love so so many cocktails, but my go to always works cocktail in just a classic gin and tonic.
I’m a fan on FB!
My favorite cocktail of the moment is anything that contains grapefruit juice, so I would have to say The Greyhound!
I also follow you on Facebook! Thanks Beth!
Baptist Wedding Punch (not on the menu anymore at Jackson’s sadly)
It’s keke lime liquor & ginger ale with crushed (a la Sonic) ice. Tastes just like what we used to drink in the fellowship hall at wedding – except with a alcoholic kick!
I’m a facebook fan :)
My favorite cocktail right now is inspired by my favorite Organic Vodka : Square One (which you can get at Midtown Wine and Spirits off Charlotte Ave)
1.5oz of Square One BASIL Organic Vodka
2oz of Grapefruit Juice
0.5oz of simply syrup
Refreshing, interesting and delicious!
I follow you on Facebook and Twitter – did I mention that I am a cocktail enthusiast! It’s all I drink :)
I’m a sucker for pretty much any cocktail featuring Rye Whiskey. My recent favorite is Whiskey, Orange Juice, homemade Grenadine, bitters and a splash of soda water.
I follow on Facebook.
And I have retweeted.
My favorite cocktail is the Manhattan!! Puts hair on your chest!

And liked you on Facebook!
I liked you on Facebook. And for a girly drink you can never go wrong with a lemon drop with a sugar rim! I’d love those tickets– fingers crossed! :)
My favorite cocktail is an Old Fashioned!!! I’ve been only a few places that nail this one!!
My current fav, which I’ve been dying to recreate (unsuccesfully, just turns into a sangria) is the Pear Tree Martini I had at Germantown East: vodka, elderflower liquer, and something else (not sure). BEST martini I’ve had!
Already an avid follower on FB
I love anything with Bulleit Bourbon in it! Lately, I’ve enjoyed it with lemon juice and tonic served over ice!
Girl, I’ve been following you on twitter, “liked” you on Facebook, following you on Pinterest, etc, etc, for years. Thanks for posting great content!
^^^This means I’ve tweeted about this sweet event and your blog. ;)
Favorite cocktail at the moment is a classic Daquiri…I’m especially fond of the Kelso Daquiri at The Patterson House. Actually anything with Rum is totally up my alley this season.
I liked on facebook, posted on twitter too. My favorite cocktail of all time is a cable car with a sugar rim. The best martini ever. I usually get them when I am traveling to Michale Mina restaurants – I wish more places would serve them!
Just “liked” you on Facebook!
My favorite is definitely the Dark and Stormy.
My all-time favorite cocktail is the Velvet Elvis – it’s Jack, Chambord and a splash of sweet & sour. Mambu had it on their menu for a long time and have recently taken it off, so I have to find somewhere new that can make it just as good!
Favorite summer libation is aTexas Ice Tea….sweet sparkling wine with Grey Goose on the rocks.
I love a basic Jack and Coke, but I also love the Amber over at Whiskey Kitchen. I need to try that Pretty in Pink cocktail the next time I’m at the Palm.
I like your facebook page.
Can’t wait for Bartender Bash after I had to miss it last year! See you there!
You know it’s hard to narrow down to a favorite cocktail. There’s just so many! If I had to choose one, I’d have to go with my tried and true Jack & Coke. It’s my staple and reminds me of football season, which you know I love. Although that Pretty in Pink cocktail sure sounds delicious!
I tweeted!

This event looks AMAZING. I love getting to see truly unique cocktails that take it to the next level. One of my favorite drinks in Nashville is the Cain & Abel over at Rumba. I am hoping that Jackson’s adopts it once they close :(
Otherwise, as far as making my own cocktail I love anything with St. Germain, muddled fruit and gin or vodka. super refreshing in the summer. Especially love muddled Basil & Strawberries at the moment.
I ‘liked’ you on Facebook :)

Ah, to choose a favorite cocktail is as hard as choosing my favorite restaurant.
But lately, I’ve really been getting into bitter things like campari and averno, so I’ll go with a Negroni!
I already like you on FB!
