The Best Key Lime Pie In The Keys

By some strange alignment of the stars, several of my friends (that are not friends with each other) have been planning vacations to the Florida Keys recently. Within a two month time period, at least five different groups of people I know have either gone, or are going very soon. Several have come to me for advice on where to stop and eat on the drive down. Perhaps this is because I raved about a certain “hidden gem” I discovered a couple of years back when attending a friend’s wedding in Islamorada. Instead of sharing the information with just a select few, I figured I might as well share it with the masses (as if the masses are reading my blog daily).

Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen, a no frills diner on the side of the road in Key Largo, is home of The Best Key Lime Pie in the Keys. In fact, it’s so good that not only does it deserve a stop on the drive down, but also on the way back up. I challenge you to sample every other key lime pie you come into contact with and see if you can top it. That’s what I did, and many wasted calories later, declared Mrs. Mac’s the best. Not too sweet and just the right amount of tart, topped off with lots of whipped cream, it’s delightful.

As much as I love the pie, I don’t want to neglect mentioning their fish, which is extremely fresh and tasty. My personal favorite is the TJ Fish Special, which is that day’s fresh catch topped with “Tijuana” sauce, made up of tomatoes, tomatillos, jalapenos, onion and fresh cilantro served with black beans and rice.

So if you’re headed to the Keys any time soon, make it a point to stop. And bring me back a whole pie, will ya?
